考古学的な証拠によると、古代の吹きガラス職人はアシスタントもベンチもない環境でガラスを作っていたと考えられます。
現代のガラス工房では苦も無く作ることができるガラスも、これらなしで作ろうとしたとたん、どうしていいか困ることが多々あります。
普段は、現代のガラス工房を使わせていただいてますが、研究として深めていく時は、当時の環境を考えないといけなくなります。
「この作業は一人でできるのか？」「一人でどうやってポンテをとるのか？」「ベンチがなければ吹き竿が転がせないではないか！」
などなど、悩みのタネが一気に増えてしまうのです。

世界にはまだまだ伝統的な方法でガラスを吹く職人さんたちがいます。彼らは古代のガラス技法の解明に役立つ大きなヒントを与えて
くれます。このような調査を初めて行ったところがシリアでした。当時はまだデジカメに動画機能がついたばかりの頃で音声は記録されず
数秒しか録画できなかったので、何度も撮ったものをつなげて編集しました。現代のガラス工房はいろんなところで動画として見ることが
出来ると思うので、それと比べてみれば、全然違うことがお分かりいただけるかと思います！といっても基本的なことは同じなんですが。

この作り方＝古代の作り方というわけではおそらくありませんが、こういう調査なしでは説得力を持って古代ガラスの技法は語れなくなります。

Based on archaeological evidence, ancient glass blowers probably made glass articles without assistants and without using convenience equipment―bench. This arise some questions; how can be the glass made without assistants? how can be the glass taken off from blow pipe by himself? and how was blow-pipe kept flat during the glass was formed?

There is still glass blowers using traditional ways in the world and they give us many keys to study ancient techniques.Syria was my first place I visited for the study of ancient glass. A glass-blower in Damascus was making a cup by himself. It is important to compare their glass-blowing with modern glass-blowing. Surely, their blowing way is not always as same as ancient ways, but I think I can’t study ancient techniques of glass without the research of modern glass workshops.
